With A Garage Heater, That Cold Space For Your Cars Can Become A Warm Place For Your Family

Garages are often considered little more than storage areas, the place where we put our cars, lawn equipment, and maybe some boxed-up household goods or tools. With a little work, however, this extra space can be turned into a project area, a workout spot or a roomy place to relax and play.

If your garage isn’t already connected to your home’s heating system, you’ll have to find a way to keep the area warm during the winter. A garage heater, or space heater, is a good option for effectively heating your garage when you need it.

  • Ceramic heaters – Small ceramic or porcelain heaters are most effective in small spaces. They generate quite a bit of heat, but they are not good at warming the large open areas you find in many garages. Smaller heaters also take longer to warm the space to a tolerable temperature. If you intend to use the garage for short periods at a time, a ceramic heater may not be powerful enough for your needs.
  • Kerosene heaters – These heaters, which use standard kerosene for fuel, generate good amounts of heat and are easy to move around and maintain. They usually have an easy-to-use electric starter. Many models do not have thermostats, so it can be a challenge to control your garage temperature with a heater like this. Kerosene heaters are also more dangerous because of the flammable fuel and the fumes.
  • Gas heaters – Professionally installed gas heaters are reliable and efficient sources of heat that use natural gas as fuel. These types of heaters can warm a space of about 1,000 square feet, which is approximately the size of a standard two-car garage. Gas heaters give you an inexpensive heating option, made even more convenient if you can add it to existing natural gas utility service for your home.
