Putting Together A Long-Term Plan For Energy Savings

Putting Together A Long-Term Plan For Energy SavingsDoes your energy bill cause you to cringe every month when you receive it? While you can’t turn back the clock, you can look forward to a future where money stays put in your wallet. Creating a long-term plan for saving energy allows you to significantly slash the amount you pay each month.

Benefits of a Long-Term Plan for Energy Savings

  • Conducting an energy audit and familiarizing yourself with energy-saving appliances gives you a good idea of where you experience energy loss and where you can get it back.
  • Using energy-saving appliances allows you to save money and help the environment.
  • Appliances that can save you energy include dish washers, water heater, air conditioner, furnace and heat pump.

Implement Your Long-Term Plan for Energy Savings

Ceiling

  • Program your ceiling fan to clockwise in the winter and counter-clockwise in the summer. Turn if off when no one’s in the room.
  • Close off any air vents in your home that are not in use.
  • Repair leaking ducts that could be the cause of energy leaks in your home.
  • Insulate the attic to avoid heat loss (or infiltration in the summer).

Walls

  • Check for any holes or tears in your insulation.
  • Add insulation to bare interior walls to help protect your home from air conditioning and heating loss.
  • Apply light paint colors to your walls that will reflect heat without trapping it.

Windows

  • Block the sun from streaming into your home by closing blinds and drapes. Blocking the sun enables you to run your air conditioner less often. But in the winter exploit your windows’ ability to easily transfer solar heat into your home.
  • Decorate your home using light-colored curtains that will allow the light to come in without raising the cost for you to run your air conditioner.

Air Conditioner/Heater

  • Raise the temperature on thermostat by several degrees during the summer and lower it several degrees in the winter.
